CSPA Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Lecture Series
2020 has been an eventful year in many ways. Social justice, particularly understanding systemic racism, has been a major theme in many sectors and sport is not immune. Beginning in the early summer of 2020, reports and news stories were released highlighting the lack of diversity in the Canadian sport system. As practitioners working in the field of sport psychology and mental training, it is our responsibility to learn more about how we can dismantle these structures and it begins with education. This 6-part series will discuss equity, diversity, and inclusion in the sport system through a variety of guest lectures.

Dr. Dan Henhawk, University of Manitoba
Indigenous Sport Participation
Dan Henhawk is Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) person from the Six Nations of the Grand River community in southern Ontario. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management at the University of Manitoba. His research interests revolve around the tensions between Western conceptualizations, and practices, of leisure and Indigenous ways of knowing and being. His graduate work involved an auto-ethnographic inquiry to understand the ways in which sport and colonialism intersected and affected his personal life. This work also involved narrative inquiry as he looked to understand the stories and narratives of his family, friends and colleagues who were also immersed in the colonized and colonizing narratives that have permeated the context of sport in the community of Six Nations. This presentation will discuss some of the intersections between narrative, sport and colonialism within the Indigenous sport context through the lens of Dr. Henhawk’s experience in sport.

Série de conférences de l’ACPS sur l’équité, la diversité et l’inclusion (ÉDI)
2020 a été une année mouvementée à bien des égards. La justice sociale, en particulier la compréhension du racisme systémique, a été un thème majeur dans de nombreux secteurs, dont le sport. Dès le début de l’été 2020, des rapports et des reportages soulignant le manque de diversité dans le système sportif canadien ont été publiés. En tant que praticiens travaillant dans le domaine de la psychologie du sport et de l’entraînement mental, il est de notre responsabilité d’en apprendre davantage sur la façon dont nous pouvons démanteler ces structures et tout cela débute par l’éducation. Cette série de 6 conférences explorera l’équité, la diversité et l’inclusion au sein du système sportif grâce à la participation de conférenciers invités.

Participation sportive autochtone
Dan Henhawk est une personne Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) de la communauté des Six Nations de Grand River dans le sud de l’Ontario. Il est présentement professeur adjoint à la Faculté de kinésiologie et de gestion des loisirs de l’Université du Manitoba. Ses intérêts de recherche tournent autour des tensions entre les conceptualisations et les pratiques occidentales des loisirs et des manières autochtones de savoir et d’être. Lors de ses études supérieures, il a effectué une étude auto-ethnographique afin de comprendre comment le sport et le colonialisme ont entrecoupé et affecté sa vie personnelle. De plus, il a aussi réalisé une étude narrative afin de comprendre les histoires et les récits de sa famille, de ses amis ainsi que de ses collègues qui étaient également immergés dans les récits colonisés et colonisateurs ayant imprégné le milieu sportif de la communauté des Six Nations. Cette présentation explorera certaines des intersections entre le récit, le sport et le colonialisme dans le milieu sportif autochtone, et ce, selon l’expérience sportive de Dr. Henhawk.
