OVERVIEW


The mini-conference will provide CSPA BC/AB members with an overview of the Critical Incident Response Model in Sport from experts Dr. Karen MacNeill and Susan Cockle.

 

The webinar aims to enhance participants’ understanding of the complexities and stakeholders involved in the ethical decision-making process and timely response to critical incidents in sport at Major Games/Events. Through a combination of research insights, practical application strategies, and personal reflections, this presentation will provide attendees with practical case examples and cooperative group activities to apply the model.  Participants will gain insight in the application of the model in a variety of contexts within sport (e.g., major competitions, in the DTE, with minors/youth athletes) and with diverse populations (OLY/PLY).

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Participants will:

  • Understand the Critical Incident Response Model in Sport 

  • Consider practical application, variables, and contextual factors of the model when used in various settings with diverse populations in sport

  •  Explore and apply the Critical Incident Response Model through cooperative group activity and moderated feedback 

  • Identify strategies and interventions consistent with the Critical Incident Response Model 

  •  Identify ethical standards of practice outlined in the AASP and CSPA Code of Ethics outlined in case examples and demonstrate ethical decision-making in the implementation of the Critical Incident Response Model 


CEU CREDIT

This webinar is pending Continuing Education Unit credits (CEU) for certified CMPCs.

You can see the presentation slides on your computer or mobile device, and listen to the audio through your device, or call in with a phone. Registrants will be provided with login information the day prior to the session. The webinar will also be archived for those who wish to watch it at a later date.

Dr. Karen MacNeill is a mental performance consultant, psychologist, and professional speaker with over 20 years of experience. She’s passionate about helping Olympians, business leaders, and organizations unleash their highest potential and shine when it matters most.


Dr. Karen has the unique experience of having competed and consulted on the world stage. She represented Team Canada as an athlete for over a decade and has worked with athletes at six Olympic Games (and counting). Most recently, she was the lead Mental Performance and Mental Health Consultant supporting Team Canada at the 2018 Olympics in Korea, 2020 Olympics in Japan, the 2022 Olympics in China, and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.


Her dynamic, dependable approach combined with her elite sport experience and understanding of corporate environments is an unmatched asset to any leader and organization.  This knowledge has equipped Dr. Karen to impact multiple Fortune 500 companies, helping leaders and their teams excel and be well in turbulent times. She’s a recipient of Avenue Calgary’s Top 40 Under 40 Award, the Women of Inspiration Game Changer Award, and Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Award.

Susan Cockle M.A.

Susan Cockle is a Registered Psychologist and Certified Mental Performance Consultant with nearly three decades of experience in private practice. She specializes in enhancing the performance and mental health of Olympic, Paralympic, and world-class professional athletes.


Certified as a High-Performance Practitioner with Sport Scientist Canada at the Senior Level, Susan has supported athletes, coaches, and staff to perform at six Olympic Games, three Paralympic Games, and numerous World Championships. Additionally, she was part of the Mental Health and Performance team for the Canadian Olympic Committee at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Games and the 2022 FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar.


As the first Mental Health Lead with the Canadian Paralympic Committee, Susan has supported Team Canada at the Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022, and Paris 2024 Paralympic Games. She will continue in this role for the Milano/Cortina 2026 Games. Susan also contributed to the Canadian Mental Health Strategy in High-Performance Sport and the protocol for the Removal and Return to Sport for Mental Health Concerns.


Susan has worked for various Canadian National Sport Organizations, including Athletics Canada, Basketball Canada, and Soccer Canada, and currently serves as the Mental Health Lead for Beach Volleyball, Sitting Volleyball, Freestyle Skiing, and Para Swimming.
